Researching a legal topic: judicial history

Case Analysis records on Westlaw UK and Case Search records on Lexis Library include a cases history, showing if a judgment has been reversed or overruled by a higher court, or cited as a precedent in subsequent cases. Hyperlinks to the full text of related cases and legislation are provided. If a case has been reversed, the Case Analysis record on Westlaw UK has a red stop sign at the top. Lexis Library uses a red cross to indicate that a case has been overruled.

For examples, compare:

Murphy v Brentwood DC [1991] 1 AC 398
Murphy v Brentwood DC [1990] 2 WLR 944

You can also use the Current Law Case Citator to track the judicial history of a case. The Current Law service includes Monthly Digests and Yearbooks as well as citators. The Current Law service is available in the LAWS sequence in Western Bank Library.
